Conflict Resolution & Communications

Much of what I’ve done in my career has been focused on technology. Yet, the best technology means nothing if those using it can’t take advantage of its capabilities to work and live better.

My communications work has included:

  • writing printed and online copy
  • designed printed materials like brochures and websites
  • proofreading and editing
  • presentation creation and delivery

…but these are only the products of what is an essential skill for all aspects of my work, helping convey information and inspiring people to take action.

In 2010, I completed a six-month training course from Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Michigan to earn a Master of Conflict Resolution certificate. I learned and practiced techniques like mediation and negotiation in many contexts to guide people with a disagreement to identify what led to their dispute, what their needs are going forward, and what solutions are acceptable to all involved.

Helping others understand what people need in a situation or work project is critical to reach a successful outcome. I learned that communication is defined by what is heard and understood and that everyone has preferred styles and modalities of communication that enables him or her to understand best.

While IT is usually known as the department of “no,” I seek to use all the communication skills I’ve learned to avoid, lessen, or clear up misunderstandings that can happen during normal office work and projects. I seek to find common ground, translating the terminology and needs of those involved, so everyone can achieve what they need.
